Quite unique this type of Christian principles are no longer taught. Too much emphasis of the worldly gains, spiritual needs are left to all school Christians.

The Basic Problems of Phenomenology: From the Lectures, Winter Semester, 1910-1911 (Husserliana: Edmund Husserl - Collected Works), by Edm

This book provides a short introduction to Husserlian Phenomenology by Husserl himself. Husserl highly regarded his work "The Basic Problems of Phenomenology" as basic for his theory of the phenomenological reduction. He considered this work as equally fundamental for the theory of empathy and intersubjectivity and for his theory of the life-world. Further, with the appendices, it reveals Husserl in a critical dialogue with himself.

Returning to the "things-appearing"
By Dr. Scott D. Churchill
Phenomenological "Viewing" of "Things-appearing", May 14, 2008
By S. D. Churchill "Doc Churchill" (Dallas) - See all my reviews

This was an exciting book for me to present to my junior psychology majors (and some graduate students) during the first half of my Phenomenological Tradition class. As a first introduction to Husserl it worked well -- better than his very brief "Idea of Phenomenology" (which in recent years was either unavailable or astronomically priced) -- and much less overwhelming for the beginner than his "Ideas" or "Crisis". As these are lecture notes, there are digressions that become tedious, though well demarcated within the text by an excellent system of headings. Most exciting about this book is that it introduces Husserl's ideas on empathy and intersubjectivity long before much of his writing on these topics began to appear in print in the mid-1920s....This shows that Husserl was concerned very early on with these themes; indeed, the appendices indicate that he referred to these lectures in subsequent years as his "lectures on empathy" or his "intersubjectivity lectures". While he does not deliver as much as one might like in these directions, he at least sets the stage for the direction that others have taken with his work (most notably, Merleau-Ponty). His discussion here of a "double reduction" -- and of the givenness of the experience of the other within one's own reduced sphere of consciousness -- contributes greatly to an English-speaking readership's understanding of a thinker who is often associated exclusively with his Cartesian-friendly "egological reduction". This text opens up the possiblity for psychologists who would seek a foundation for a phenomenological method of qualitative research into the experience of others. Coupled with Merleau-Ponty's "The Primacy of Perception" (which takes matters to the next horizon) and field trips to local zoos and museums, I found that students were able to embrace phenomenology as a method of entry into the worlds of others, when guided by the insights presented in this text.

I Sing the Body Electric!: And Other Stories, by Ray Bradbury

The mind of Ray Bradbury is a wonder-filled carnival of delight and terror that stretches from the verdant Irish countryside to the coldest reaches of outer space. Yet all his work is united by one common thread: a vivid and profound understanding of the vast set of emotions that bring strength and mythic resonance to our frail species. Bradbury characters may find themselves anywhere - and anywhen. A horrified mother may give birth to a strange blue pyramid. A man may take Abraham Lincoln out of the grave - and meet another who puts him back. An amazing Electrical Grandmother may come to live with a grieving family. An old parrot may have learned over long evenings to imitate the voice of Ernest Hemingway and become the last link to the last link to the great man. A priest on Mars may confront his fondest dream: to meet the Messiah.

Each of these magnificent creations has something to tell us about our own humanity - and all of their fates await you in this new edition of 28 classic Bradbury stories and one luscious poem. Travel on an unpredictable and unforgettable literary journey, safe in the hands of one of the great men of imagination.

The stories included are "The Kilimanjaro Device", "The Terrible Conflagration Up at the Place", "Tomorrow's Child", "The Women", "The Inspired Chicken Motel", "Downwind from Gettysburg", "Yes, We'll Gather at the River", "The Cold Wind and the Warm", "Night Call, Collect", "The Haunting of the New", "I Sing the Body Electric!" "The Tombling Day", "Any Friend of Nicholas Nickleby's Is a Friend of Mine", "Heavy-Set", "The Man in the Rorschach Shirt", "Henry the Ninth", "The Lost City of Mars", "The Blue Bottle", "One Timeless Spring", "The Parrot Who Met Papa", "The Burning Man", "A Piece of Wood", "The Messiah", "G.B.S.---Mark V", "The Utterly Perfect Murder", "Punishment Without Crime", "Getting Through Sunday Somehow", "Drink Entire: Against the Madness of Crowds", and "Christus Apollo".

Not forgetting the Pekingnese dog troupe...
By Michele L. Worley
A lovely short story + 1 poem collection, with some Martian and Royal Hibernian cheek by jowl. My review is in alphabetical order rather than presentation order, for ease of reference.
"Any Friend of Nicholas Nickleby's is a Friend of Mine" - One fine summer's day, a man arrived at the train station in Green Town, Illinois - giving the name Charles Dickens.
"Christus Apollo" - A poem, speculating on how many worlds in the wide universe have seen the birth of a Christ child.
"The Cold Wind and the Warm" - The Royal Hibernian Hotel in Dublin is having a dull winter, when six male ballet dancers descend out of the blue for a 24 hour stay, looking for an unlikely new place.
"Downwind from Gettysburg" - Phipps says that's where we must stand, the only hearing place. (He's always dreamed of making a movie with a farmer and his son standing at the edge of the crowd listening to Lincoln's address.). Instead, he built a tourist attraction in Illinois with a robot Lincoln - and someone has now 'assassinated' the robot.
"The Haunting of the New" - Another story near Dublin's Royal Hibernian Hotel, but not with the same characters. Nora's family has lived at Grynwood for the last 200 years, each generation wilder than the last. (On Charlie's first visit, two rival ballet mobs, separated by a language barrier (Manhattan vs. Hamburg) were visiting, along with a Duchess. Nora greeted Charlie stark-naked at the front door, only to have the Duchess strip down in response as she came in.) Sometimes Marion brings his Pekingnese dog troupe, which always gets drunker and sicker than he. Now (years later) Nora offers to sell Grynwood to Charlie - and for the first time, the house has no weekend guests. What happened?
"Heavy-Set" - That's one of his nicknames, as well as Sammy (for Samson). He spends all his free time bodybuilding, but there's something not quite right about him.
"Henry the Ninth" - He's the last man in Britain, this December, because everyone else has finally given up, left the island, and relocated south. (Obviously written, I must say, by somebody who never lived through a Florida summer, but I love it anyway.)
"The Inspired Chicken Motel" - The family stayed there while looking for work in the Depression. The motel chicken laid eggs "right out of Revelation".
"I Sing the Body Electric!" - This was turned into an episode on the original Twilight Zone, which was OK, but the source is better. It begins the week the world ended - the day Tim, Tom, Agatha, and Father returned from Mother's funeral. So Father picked up a Fantoccini brochure on buying an Electrical Grandmother...
"The Kilimanjaro Device" - The narrator is one of the loyal readers of an old man who died in the wrong place at the wrong time; they've all chipped in to try to change that. The writer isn't named. If you don't recognize him from the context, look up Ernest Hemingway and start reading.
"The Lost City of Mars" - This really ought to have been in The Martian Chronicles; it explains how the dry canals were reborn. A very rich man, looking for the fabled lost city of Dia-Sao, had the canals refilled so that he could search for it by water (air and land expeditions having failed). Wilder and Parkhill (from the 4th Expedition) are invited to join the canal yacht party. Nobody quite knows why the city was abandoned.
"The Man in the Rorschach Shirt" - The doctor's shirts were an easy talking point with total strangers - designed by Jackson Pollack.
"Night Call, Collect" - When Mars was evacuated at the beginning of the war, Emil Barton was left behind in one of the Martian cities, alone. He recorded messages and set up the computers to call him at random, so he could hear a human voice. But at eighty, messages left by twenty-year-olds can be hard to take.
"The Terrible Conflagration Up at the Place" - A gang of Dublin men show up at Lord Kilgotten's place to burn it down (some of them also appear in 'The Cold Wind and the Warm'). But the old lord himself answers the door, invites them in, and offers them a drink (asking them to wipe their feet, which they do). And nothing is ever as easy at you think it will be.
"The Tombling Day" - As the bodies of the old cemetery are moved to the new, Grandma has come to see William Simmons one last time. And the real tragedies of the deaths of the young are explored.
"Tomorrow's Child" - The baby was born healthy, but in the wrong dimension - he looked like a blue pyramid. A terrible problem for his parents, who can't communicate with him, and for him - he doesn't know what the 'normal' world looks like, never having seen it that way.
"The Women" - One of the 'women' is the ocean, luring the husband of the other woman to his doom.
"Yes, We'll Gather at the River" - A line from a hymn, which springs to mind since "the Lord giveth, and the Highway Commissioner taketh away." The new highway is being built 300 yards from the tiny hamlet of Oak Lane. (If you like this, read the opening chapters of Douglas Adams' The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, particularly the definition of a bypass).

By Lisa Logan
First off, you can't go wrong with Ray Bradbury. This is a wonderful collection of short stories I first read a million years ago in junior high, & again in high school. And again, as an alleged grown-up. It just seems to get better with time. So happy to have found it again.

Her twin brother, Radisene, works in the lowland capital of Maseru, struggling amid political upheaval to find a life for himself away from the hills. As the years pass, Radisene's fortunes rise and fall in the city, while Dikosha remains in the village, never leaving and never aging. And through it all, the community watches, comments, and passes judgment.

From Booklist
Like all Mda's novels, including Heart of Redness (2002), this contemporary story of southern Africa places contemporary politics in the context of family and community, past and present. The setting here is a mountain village in Lesotho, on the South African border. Radisene is close to his beloved sister, Dikosha, until he leaves for the capital city, Maseru, where be becomes a smart ambulance-chaser, so successful in his machinations that he even sends money back to the village to build his mother a mansion. Dikosha refuses to have anything to do with him. In fact, she lives in her own world of magic and music, closely in touch with the dancers in the local cave paintings that were created by the Bushmen long before the Sotho came there and took the land. Mda's blend of magical realism and the cruel farce of national politics reveals the wildness everywhere. At the heart of the story is the mountain community, never idyllic, bursting with jealousy and spite, yet home through drought, snow, and mist. Hazel Rochman

This Time We Win: Revisiting the Tet Offensive, by James S Robbins

Most of what Americans have heard about the Tet Offensive is wrong. The brief battles in early 1968 during the Vietnam conflict marked the dividing line between gradual progress toward possible victory and slow descent to a humiliating defeat. That the enemy was handily defeated on the ground was considered immaterial; that it could mount attacks at all was deemed a military triumph for the Communists. This persistent view of Tet is a defeatist story line that continues to inspire America’s foreign enemies and its domestic critics of the use of force abroad.

In This Time We Win, James S. Robbins at last provides an antidote to the flawed Tet mythology still shaping the perceptions of American military conflicts against unconventional enemies and haunting our troops in combat. In his re-examination of the Tet Offensive, Robbins analyzes the Tet battles and their impact through the themes of terrorism, war crimes, intelligence failure, troop surges, leadership breakdown, and media bias. The result is an explosion of the conventional wisdom about this infamous surge, one that offers real lessons for today’s unconventional wars. Without a clear understanding of these lessons, we will find ourselves refighting the Tet Offensive again and again.

From Publishers Weekly
Robbins, a senior editorial writer for foreign affairs at The Washington Times, invokes Osama bin Ladin to argue that the guerilla warfare tactics of American enemies has historically lead to the U.S. losing fights against inferior troops; Vietnam, Robbins believes, was winnable, and so is Afghanistan. The author argues that America would have seen victory in Vietnam if President Johnson had controlled access to the battlefield the way George W. Bush did in Iraq and had removed naysayers like Robert MacNamara from battle zones. Robbins, executive director of the American Security Council Foundation, blames the usual suspects: the left-wing media (particularly Walter Cronkite and Noam Chomsky), John Kerry, and others. Johnson is criticized for believing in the efficacy of negotiation, and Robbins excuses American excesses by comparing the My Lai Massacre to atrocities committed by the North Vietnamese. The raid on the U.S. embassy in Saigon during the Tet Offensive was not, in his opinion, a clear illustration of the enemy's ability to infiltrate the heart of our positions; like all polemics, Robbins's version of the tale will please some and madden others. Review

“History is written by the victors, but eventually the truth comes out.”

—Bui Diem, former South Vietnamese Ambassador to the US

“The Tet Offensive is a standing inspiration to today's terrorists and insurgents. This Time We Win is a direct assault on the logic that transforms U.S. tactical victories into strategic defeats.”

—Barry R. McCaffrey, General, USA (Ret.)

“Tough questions and startling answers. Forget what you've heard about the Tet Offensive. Jim Robbins sets the record straight.”

—Colonel Jack Jacobs, US Army Retired. Medal of Honor, 1969, Vietnam

“This book is a wonderfully detailed chronicle of how North Vietnam's crushing military defeat at Tet was converted into a political victory in the US which would sap the American will to win. I recommend this book to American veterans still perplexed at this dichotomy as well as to the public. It is truly a great account of this critical period.”

—John O’Neill, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Unfit for Command

“For over forty years the American experience in the Tet Offensive has been used and abused by those who try to apply the analogy of Tet to contemporary policy. This Time We Win corrects simplistic interpretations of Tet that are often used to create the impression of inevitable defeat in Vietnam and other conflicts. This book deserves a wide readership.”

—Brigadier General H.R. McMaster, author of Dereliction of Duty: Lyndon Johnson, Robert McNamara, The Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the Lies that Led to Vietnam

James Robbins is not interested in recrimination as much as he is in explanation. Yes, he sets the record straight on Tet, but the book does so much more than that. It demonstrates that most Americans supported the war in Vietnam, and argues convincingly that we were winning that war. The tragedy of Tet was not that we lost, nor that this battle proved we could not win. Just the opposite: Tet showed (and Robbins proves) that the enemy was weak, and that our strategy was working. The real failure was one of understanding, especially at the highest levels. Even there, though, Robbins does not play the blame game. He is sympathetic to the demands of leadership, even if he criticizes those who fail to display it. And the author also refuses to reduce the war to a bumper sticker complaint about the media. Robbins shows the mistakes of particular individuals, but there is no simplistic blanket criticism here. The book is well researched, well argued, and above all well written, sophisticated but readable and unintimidating. It is appropriate for anyone who is interested in Vietnam, but it is also targeted at those who want to understand counterinsurgency and wartime leadership during any era, including our own. Everyone should read this book.

BRILLIANT
By Phillip Jennings
I can't imagine a better book ever being written about TET '68 and the lead up and aftermath of that tragically misreported and misunderstood event. As a Viet Nam vet and sometimes author about the Viet Nam War, I cannot praise this book enough. With a deftness I found humbling, Dr. Robbins characterizes the major players (North,South, U.S.) in the war with a brevity that reveals more than long rambling biographies (Johnson, Giap, McNamara...) can ever do. The sections about South Vietnamese Colonel Loan and 'the photo' (executing a Viet Cong) are alone worth the price of the book.
This is a great book for all who are interested in the truth about that war, and for all those who are concerned about America's difficult role in limited wars.

This is a must read and America must Win when we go to War or don't go.

The smoke has cleared, the troops are long gone and James S. Robbins sets the record straight with "This Time We Win." Images of defeated American forces fleeing Vietnam in helicopters are erased. With great clarity, James Robbins revists the TET offensive from the battle field and from the American opinion polls. A must read to understand what went wrong in Vietnam and how to prevent it from happening again. Jim Neidner, Neidner's Talk Radio Show/Houston, [...]

Two of America's most talented activists team up to deliver a bold and hilarious satire of modern environmental policy in this fully illustrated graphic novel. The U.S. government gives robot machines from space permission to eat the earth in exchange for bricks of gold. A one-eyed bunny rescues his friends from a corporate animal-testing laboratory. And two little girls figure out the secret to saving the world from both of its enemies (and it isn't by using energy-efficient light bulbs or biodiesel fuel). As the World Burns will inspire you to do whatever it takes to stop ecocide before it’s too late.

From School Library Journal
Grade 10 Up–This simply drawn graphic satire is largely message-driven, but the message is still entertaining and thought-provoking. As the lighthearted lead character shares what governments, corporations, and activists tell individual Americans to do to save the Earth, her cynical counterpart exposes the futility of these simple solutions. The truth is, even if each and every one of us switched to compact fluorescent bulbs and became vegetarians it would only be a drop in the bucket compared to the damage corporate and government policies are doing to the world environment. The story that binds these notions together is an upcoming alien invasion and a renegade bunny trying to end animal experimentation. The characters are crudely drawn with bare sets, but this style works in a tale in which the words are carrying so much weight. (The politicians have sharper teeth than the bears.) This book doesn't offer up any real answers to what is clearly portrayed as a frightening state of affairs–it includes an animal uprising. However, it will inflame teens' passion about the environment and possibly open more eyes.–Jamie Watson, Harford County Public Library, MD

Review

"McMillan's expressive style, pared down to the basics and intensified over the years, allows for instant communication of thoughtful rage. . . a fast-moving page-turner."–The Comics Journal

"In As the World Burns the large scope and indictment of every facet of society is, to say the least, thought-provoking."–Cleveland Free Times

"Readers exasperated with, or just plain tired of, simplistic guides offering purportedly quick and easy ways to resolve global warming and other momentous concerns of the day will delight in this razor-sharp critique packaged as a cute-kid-and-funny-animal cartoon... Jensen and McMillan roll critical thinking and well-structured graphic-novel storytelling into a compelling whole."–Booklist

"A compelling message and an expressive artwork."–The Sylvanian

"As the product of the creative marriage of activist philosopher Derrick Jensen and political cartoonist Stephanie McMillan, As the World Burns displays trademark qualities of both professions:the big ideas and calculated statistics of Jensen's and the witticism and quirky characterization of McMillan's."–World Literature Today

"A sharply worded satire that delivers a litany of reasons why our culture's alienation from the wild is literally paving the way to global destruction."–North Coast Journal

"Jensen takes the complexity of anti-civilization philosophy and distills it down to one important message. If we can't stop destroying everything, soon we’ll have destroyed everything."–Slingshot

"In As The World Burns, satire bites through the sharp vampire-pointed teeth of McMillan's corporate overlords...initially, the graphic novel's underlying message may seem heavy-handed and preachy, but the writing is so acutely entertaining that the message doesn't feel force-fed...Plus, the drawings are so darn cute."–Broward/Palm Beach New Times

Bunny Terror Alert
By doomsdayer520
The anarcho-primitive activist and post-civilization philosopher Derrick Jensen really knows how to make an impact. Readers who agree with his general philosophy need not agree with every single one of his positions, though you can't deny that he's very effective at advancing them with deft use of persuasion and polemics. This tongue-in-cheek graphic novel came as a bit of a surprise, because I assumed that the "stay in denial" portion of the title would be directed at anti-environmentalists. On the contrary, the book is actually directed at environmentalists who have fallen for popular rhetoric about how their individual actions (recycling, buying new light bulbs, driving a hybrid, etc.) may actually make a major difference in the health of the planet. I don't totally agree with Jensen's disdain for personal virtue, but it's hard to deny that casual environmentalism detracts attention from the true causes of the world's problems. The status quo in business, economics, and politics is the real problem, and to save the planet we might just need a revolutionary structural overhaul of modern civilization. While this fictional story is simplistic and a bit forced, and comes nowhere near the intelligence and emotion of Jensen's other works, as an entertaining graphic novel the message is quite compelling. The low-key but expressive artwork of political cartoonist Stephanie McMillan surely adds to the effect. Perhaps this type of quick-hitting storytelling, rather than lengthy technical and philosophical screeds, will inspire caring folks to take real action. [~doomsdayer520~]

"Stop insisting on your growth economy, on acquiring more and more until you consume the entire planet."
By Jessica Lux
Derrick Jensen and Stephanie McMillan's As the World Burns is a revolutionary graphic novel decrying the failure of the green movement. We have become a self-congratulatory society of "green" consumers, recyclers, yogi mediators, and letter-writers. Utilizing pigtailed girls, a one-eyed eco-revolutionary bunny, and a wise bird, the authors expose the fallacies of patting ourselves on the back as we continue down an unsustainable consumption path headed straight for world destruction. Some quick math performed by Kranti (a character from McMillan's Minimum Security cartoon) reveals that even if everyone (100% of the US population) changed our light bulbs, recycled half our total waste, cut our driving in half, installed low-flow showerheads, and adjusted our thermostats by two degrees, the end results would be a ONE-TIME 21% reduction in carbon emissions, which given our current rate of growth, would be offset in 10 years.

The real culprits in our ecocide? Corporations and the government they have in their pockets. And what are they doing? Running marketing campaigns and releasing movies to convince individual consumers to take the blame. In As the World Burns, a former-politician-turned-activist conspires with corporations to distract individuals from the systemic predicament, knowing full well that green consumers will pay more to feel good about themselves.

As the World Burns is much more than sharp dialogue about the futility of eco-friendly consumerism. Aliens have also arrived on the planet, intent on eating up all Earth's resources, and expecting to have to fight the planet's current residents. To their surprise, the Bible-thumping Dad-worshipping President gladly gives away the planet in exchange for bars of gold, which the aliens know is absolutely useless, not even giving the humans a buzz, but they go gaga for it. The plot thickens even farther as a pill-pushing therapist tries to medicate away our heroine's societal discontent, the one-eyed Bunnista starts his own campaign to free tortured animals, and the government locks bunnies and any suspected bunny sympathizers in terrorist detention centers.

The authors of As the World Burns argue that modern industrial society is inherently unsustainable, requiring a no-compromise stance from activists who truly want to change the direction of the global population. In the novel, a raccoon advises, "Stop insisting on your growth economy, on acquiring more and more until you consume the entire planet." We can no longer ignore the natural world, but as the wise bird educates us, humans lived in harmony with nature for thousands of years and could learn to again if we were willing.

Someone had to say it
By Howard M. Switzer
Another excellent work from Derrick Jensen. The so-called green movement is being co-opted by the very mega corporations who are doing the destroying of the planet. They make the big decisions, they rig the elections, they own the mass media and public mind control technologies, they control the economy, the money and they will not stop. Al Gore described part of the problem and told us what we can do, but Derrick does the math. If every man woman and child did them all, and they never would, it only adds up to 21% of the carbon that the US spews. The rest comes from the mega industries and their carbon spew increases about 2% per year so that savings won't last long. Buying green products will not save the planet. We need to find a way for people to understand that they are being bamboozled so they can step into their own power. For those who will say this book is short on solutions I say that is because there really isn't going to be any solution until a lot of people quit believing all the green-wash hype. How we get everyone talking to one another and getting out of our mass denial, so we can do something effective, is the project that we need to focus on. Derrick has described what we are denying, now we have work to do. We see the enemy and it is us, ...but mostly its them.
