About the Author
After studying graphic design in his native Brazil, Felipe Taborda spent many years in New York and London, working with renowned designers including Milton Glaser. He has taken part of important design projects in the region, is a frequent speaker and defender of Latin Culture around the world, and his works have been exhibited in more than 50 countries. He teaches and runs his design consultancy office in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Julius Wiedemann was born and raised in Brazil. After studying graphic design and marketing, he moved to Japan, where he worked in Tokyo as art editor for digital and design magazines. Since joining TASCHEN, he has been building up the digital and media collection with titles such as Animation Now!, the Advertising Now series, the Web Design series, and TASCHEN's 1000 Favorite Websites.

About the Author

Mark Freeman is Professor of Psychology and Dean of the Class of 2011 at the College of the Holy Cross, where he has also served as the W. This book was a real pleasure to find. It is intellectual yet thoroughly readable. Anyone interested in philosophy or psychology would enjoy reading this book. Yes, it is a scholarly work, but no one should be scared away from this book by that term. Since reading it, I often find myself thinking about "Hindsight" and its effect on examining one's life. Very fine work. How seamlessly Mark Freeman moves from the lyrical to the scholarly voice, imparting a rich and eclectic body of knowledge in a composite whole. This suite of five stories hits all of Ishiguro's signature notes, but the shorter form mutes their impact. In Crooner, Tony Gardner, a washed-up American singer, goes sloshing through the canals of Venice to serenade his trophy wife, Lindy. The narrator, Jan, is a hired guitar player whose mother was a huge fan of Tony, but Jan's experience playing for Tony fractures his romantic ideals. Lindy returns in the title story, which finds her in a luxury hotel reserved for celebrity patients recovering from cosmetic surgery. The narrator this time is Steve, a saxophonist who could never get a break because of his loser ugly looks. Lindy idly strikes up a friendship with Steve as they wait for their bandages to come off and their new lives to begin. In the final story, Cellists, an unnamed saxophonist narrator who, like Jan, plays in Venice's San Marco square, observes the evolving relationship of a Hungarian cello prodigy after he meets an American woman. The stories are superbly crafted, though they lack the gravity of Ishiguro's longer works (Never Let Me Go; Remains of the Day), which may leave readers anticipating a crescendo that never hits. Ishiguro blends musical concepts with their literary counterparts in his latest work, and Nocturnes has the ephemeral quality of a song cycle with recurring themes and motifs developed in different prose keys. Though critics admired Ishiguro's lovely writing, "unassuming to the point of near-invisibility, like a lake whose still surface belies the turbulent currents beneath" (Los Angeles Times), they took issue with his characters—insubstantial and unconvincing when compared to the haunting creations found in his novels—and his implausible plot developments. Perhaps Entertainment Weekly summed it up best by stating that Nocturnes, by any other writer, would be praiseworthy; by a celebrated author like Ishiguro, it can best be likened to a minor work from a master composer.

Involving Collection with One Great Story

"Cellists", the final story in NOCTURNES, is superior work. In this story, a young cellist, Tibor, works closely with an unconventional teacher, Eloise, who makes him feel like he is a superior musician. Eventually, the story shows that Eloise, who considers both herself and Tibor to be virtuosos, has a sensitivity to music that is beyond her musicianship. Nonetheless, their musical interaction has a lifetime effect on Tibor, who thereafter has to adapt his talent and sense of virtuosity to his opportunities.

IMHO, the four other stories in NOCTURNES are less successful. Why? In "Cellists", Ishiguro presents, explores, and resolves a situation. But in his other stories, he captures characters after a transformational event has occurred ("Crooner") or life-shaping attitudes have formed ("Nocturne"). Or, his stories capture moments before an emotional situation has attained focus ("Come Rain or Come Shine" and "Malvern Hills"). These stories, in other words, present, but don't really resolve a dynamic. They read like they could be chapters in longer works that Ishiguro will never write.

The subtitle of NOCTURNES, "Five Stories of Music and Nightfall", is atmospheric and right for Ishiguro, whose stories don't really convey a clear sense of place, even though he identifies the location of his first four stories as Venice, London, Malvern Hills, and Hollywood. These stories unfold in dream-like bubbles, where the characters and the small decisions they make often seem a trifle weird and implausible.

Even so, an alternative and more telling subtitle might be "Five Stories of Success and Relationships," since the issue of success within difficult or strange relationships is at or near the center of these stories. Recommended.

Do not bother.

Had high hopes but, alas. Each story started well but ended mysteriously. In other words, the endings made no sense. I would not recommend it. Ishiguro's best: The Remains of the Day and, my all time favorite(which I read twice) Never Let Me Go. He is a good writer, is a pleasure to read but, I like my stories to make sense.

A disappointment for the price, but probably the best available in print.

I used this textbook for an introductory-level class in geomorphology for undergrads and graduate students. The course assumed no background in geomorphology, but required a beginning course in geology or physical geography. While this text was adequate for the class' needs (and is superior to or on par with others currently in print), I have a number of frustrations with the book.

First: for the price, this textbook is poorly made. The binding is weak, and the pages are of a thin, low-quality paper that allows highlighter ink to bleed through (so be prepared to do a lot of underlining instead). There are no color photographs, except for a couple of photo inserts in the center to supplement the otherwise black and white diagrams. The images themselves are also often too far from their references, so there is a lot of flipping back and forth in the text while you read about a topic that doesn't correspond with the actual images on the pages (which typically belong to a concept described several pages earlier).

The writing itself is fairly accessible, but at times becomes overly complicated becaues of poorly-defined terms, circumlocutive explanations, and redundancies. Terms are often defined well after they've been used in the text, and the definitions often include or are anchored by the term itself. This unecessarily complicates the sentence structure in many cases, as in this example from page 305:

"Ice sheets and ice caps are large enough not to be confined by topography, and their configuration reflects the size and shape of the glacier, rather than the underlying topography."

As a consequence, the flow of many chapters is choppy, and it is occasionally difficult to find all the information you need quickly when looking up terms or studying for an exam.

With these weaknesses in mind, the text itself does do a fairly good job of addressing a wide range of subjects pertaining to geomorphology, including both the patterns and processes of landforms creation. It is fairly up-to-date, and the figures are clear and well-explained (though once again the use of color would greatly enhance the usefulness of this text). It covers a wide range of landforms, including fluvial and eolian processes, shorelines, several chapters devoted to glaciers and glaciation, and tectonic landforms.

With a shortage of alternative texts, Surface Processes and Landforms is an acceptable introduction to geomorphology. Sections that are less up-to-date (since the last edition in 1999) can be supplemented effectively with outside readings. A revised third edition could easily clear up most of the problems in the second, with the inclusion of better images and a tighter editing job. For the price, it fails to deliver in some key areas, however, and non-majors especially will want to consider this before making an investment; find a used copy if you can, or share with a friend.

Good Textbook

I used this textbook for a geography class called "Landforms". It was a great guide and a fairly easy read. My only problem with it is it is all in black and white except for a couple of color photo inserts.

She also served as Coordinator of Health Occupations and Practical Nursing at Nassau Tech Board of Cooperative Education Services, Westbury, New York, where she was responsible for several health career programs offered at Nassau Boces, including Practical Nursing, Nurse Assistance, Medical Assistant, Medical Lab Technician, Dental Assistant, and Dental Lab. In addition, she worked to establish a career ladder program from health care worker to practical nurse. Before becoming the administrator of these programs, she taught Practical Nursing for more than twelve years.

About the Author

Jack Hubball, PhD, is the lead criminalist for the Connecticut State Police Forensic Laboratory, which provides analyses for organic compounds from a variety of samples submitted from crime scenes. During his tenure at the Laboratory, Dr. Hubball has analyzed more than 10,000 items. He is the laboratory representative to the Connecticut State Police K-9 Unit and provides final testing and third-party certification for the accelerant, drug, and explosives detection teams. Dr. Hubball also is a consultant to two companies specializing in polymer-related cases. As a consultant he has performed hundreds of polymer analyses.

Michael Bolgar is the founder and CEO of AccuStandard, Inc. and an organic chemist with over 40 years experience in synthesizing complex organic molecules. His early work with unique industrial compounds led him to start his own company concentrating on the synthesis, formulation and certification of organic chemical reference standards. These standards are used worldwide for monitoring pollutants originating from industrial chemical products such as polymers. AccuStandard is the first and only company to have synthesized all 209 PCB congeners and all 209 PBDE congeners. In addition to these primary compounds, his synthesis department has produced many of their metabolites and has published papers on these subjects.

Joseph Groeger is president of Mantis Associates Inc. in Storrs Mansfield, Connecticut, which is dedicated to product development in consumer products, food packaging, and drug delivery devices/systems. He has more than 30 years of practical experience in development, selection, formulation, testing, and analysis of rubber, thermoplastics, adhesives, foams, composites, and polymer coatings. He has developed new materials for medical delivery devices, battery seals and insulators, electrical insulation systems, flame-retardant materials, coatings, food packaging, adhesives, and others. Mr. Groeger has published extensively and holds numerous patents that focus on polymer applications.

Susan Meronek is the general manager at AccuStandard, Inc. in New Haven, Connecticut. She is an inorganic analytical chemist with over 25 years experience in environmental analysis and reference standards manufacturing. Ms. Meronek has many years of environmental analytical experience, including integrating the inorganic chemical reference standard product line into AccuStandard's original organic-only business. She was instrumental in AccuStandard's original ISO certifications and accreditation by NIST under the NVLAP program for the years of NIST's involvement.
