About the Author
Deputy Assistant Chief John Norman is a veteran of more than 40 years in the fire service, with a wide range of experience. He has fought fires in rural, suburban, and urban settings. Now retired, Norman was Chief of Special Operations with the New York Fire Department from 2001 to 2007. Until that time, as a Battalion Chief, he had been assigned to the 16th Battalion in Harlem. In the days after the collapse of the Twin Towers, Norman was designated as the Search and Rescue manager for the World Trade Center site. He operated in that position as a member of the Incident Commanders General Staff for two months before assuming his assignment as the Chief in Charge of the Special Operations Command on a full-time basis.
Chief Norman is also author of Fire Department Special Operations (Fire Engineering, 2009).

Informative, easy read

I've read dozens of books for promotional exams and Norman's book is by far the most informative and enjoyable to read. The author puts plenty of excellent tactical information and lays it out in an easy to read fashion. I highly recommend this book for fire officers and those who want to get better at their job.

Buy with the cd

I have read several different tactics books through the years as I continue to study for LT. This one is by far the least boring. It's easy to read. I just skip over the war stories since I don't think those will be on our test. It's a thick book and with only 25 questions coming from it, a lot to retain. I bought this with the CD to help me study

As a fire officer in a big US city fire department, I have utilized this book for everyday knowledge to help me keep my guys safe, and for the purpose of promotional preparation...it has been invaluable on both fronts. It is worth its weight in gold and then some. Another outstanding book is "Strategic and Tactical Considerations on the Fire Ground" by Philly DC James Smith. Two must own books for any fire officer.
