A good hand book

I bought this and a couple of other books while looking for alternative methods to deal with calculations for a submerged broad crested weir. This book offered not only a method for analyzing it, but a great reference on weirs in general, and that is just one chapter of many.
Whereas most texts cover weirs in, at most, a few pages, this book devotes a quite useful chapter. Note that you must read the whole chapter to get the definitions of the variables, which are scattered throughout, but are consistent throughout. It also requires some informed thought to sort through to what is most significant to the task at hand. I am not sure how it would work as a text book as I flipped immediately to the chapter I wanted, but it definitely works as a hand book.
There are some USBR manuals that can be downloaded which are also useful, but this book provides a good background and roundup of information from around the world. It looks like one of those essential additions to my hydraulics library.

Excellent hydraulic engineering reference

This book is all about the hydraulic engineering of open channel flows. It covers basic hydraulics, as well as unsteady flow situations.
The text starts with a review of the basic principles of fluid mechanics, then continue with the flow resistance calculations. The 5th chapter marks the start of the high-expertise engineering material covered in the next 9 chapters. Each section is well-documented and it becomes obvious that the author, Dr Sergio Montes, is himself a world expert in hydraulic engineering.
Except for one chapter (Chap. 12) on air entrainment that I found outdated, I enjoyed genuinely the book and I have already made good use of several parts. In my opinion, this book is the perfect reference for postgraduate students and hydraulic engineers working actively in the field.

The book you didn't know you need

Impressive book on Open Channel Flows. Contains the classical outlook and some "new" and fresh approaches (let's make it clear that it is dated from 1998 anyway). I bought it following references of Dr. Castro-Orgaz in his papers and public suggestion of Prof. Chanson on Amazon and it has been a very positive surprise.
Major drawback? The price. Mine is second-hand.. But after checking, I would consider even a new acquisition.
