I have this and love it ...so this was a gift for a friend having major surgery. Print is very easy to read--cover is comfortable and lovely to hold-- very soft. Scriptures all written out so easy to read Bible scriptures right on same page. I think this is my favorite devotional Ever...and I have several. This version hard to find -- thanks to Amazon for giving me a source to order it from! Makes a terrific gift but get one for yourself too!

Design with nature, not against it

I can't believe I am the first to review this book. It was one of the most important books in my library when it first came out over 25 years ago and I still refer to it once a year or so.
Ian McHarg pioneered both a "logical" way to approach human enterprise within the natural world, and the analytic/presentation methodology which is now used by virtually all planners. At least the technicals aspects of the methodology are used; the real struggle to understand the principals behind prioritizing land use is still ongoing.
If you're looking for some clear and easy to understand directions to help get us out of the mess we've made of our world, "Design With Nature" is a good place to start.

Recently re-issued in a 25th-anniversary edition, this book has obviously retained its position. Why? Because it is *the* place to begin an environmental impact statement. It should be on the bookshelf, and engraved in the heart and mind, of anyone connected with, or concerned about, planning for the future.
McHarg takes the simple idea of overlay maps--which may contain any type of information--and builds up a procedure for making the difficult trade-offs involved in resolving competing ideas about land use.
No local community should be without a set of McHarg overlays. Any citizen group concerned about the actions of a 'developer' should be able to prepare its own overlay for the town's McHarg base map, showing its assessement of areas that need protection and areas that are suitable for the proposed use. This may not make everyone happy, but it at least guarantees that the issues and specific sites are understood by all, and that specific concerns have been fairly addressed.

at last, a yoga book for me

I've been away from yoga for 5 years, but this is the book that brought me back. It's yoga for the rest of us, yoga that doesn't make you feel entirely inadequate, yoga that my middle-aged joints say yes to. And the pictures are a treat. Real believable people showing clearly how it's done.

Excellent for those who are physically challenged

My yoga instructor let me borrow this book and I am glad she did. Like it so well I bought my own copy. It provides a great and easy way to ease into yoga and is a must for those who have no desire to be able to one day turn into a pretzel, but simply want to feel better. Best part is that the book offers easy and practical strectches that one can do using things around the house - you don't have to go out and buy any new equipment to get started. Another benefit is that many of the poses can be done anywhere without any equipment so you can stretch throughout the day if you start feeling stressed or your muscles get tight.

inspiring creative book on child psychotherapy

this book is not about autism but about being human as a therapist and the humanity of very disturbed children..it is about how the author learned over time that the kind of psychoanalytic therapy she had originally tried with an autistic boy was not helpful - and how what she learned from that changed her ways of working with all sorts of disturbed children. Alvarez is a remarkably creative and honest clinican and a wonderful writer.

This book is about the bravest modern work on the subject I have seen. It takes real courage to stand up against the organized scorn of angry mothers of autistic children. Those women will want to kill you if you suggest that autism might be triggered by mistakes in child rearing, and might therefore be curable--or at least alleviated--through psychotherapy. Like it or not, this is what Alvarez is implying. Some reviewers think Temple Grandin is Brave??? What a joke.

One study of different methods of treatment and education for children with autism established that they did worse in psychoanalysis than in any other form of treatment. High-functioning people with autism are usually provoked to laughter or fury by reading psychoanalytic "interpretations" of their behaviour. Anyone genuinely interested in understanding autism should read one of the excellent first-person accounts written by brave and brilliant individuals such as Temple Grandin.
