This book works. Fantastic

The most practical book on speed reading I have ever read. This is my fifth book on the subject. Other books taught me to read faster,but comprehension suffered. With this book they teach you how to read faster AND gain much more comprehension. You just have to try one or two of the many methods presented and when you find one that fits...practice,practice,practice!!! My reading spread was 180 words per minute. After 62 days I hit 1,000 words per minute.This includes textbooks and nonfiction. This was the only speed reading book I have read that provided me with a way to do this. This book has changed the way I read and it finally got me to stop "subvocally" reading the words. For the price of a Value meal you can change your life. I now have more time for life, instead of hitting the books for college all day. I am a logistics and Transportation major.

Incredible book! A life-changer, reading is so important!

This book is amazing. I bought it a year ago and yes, for a while it was on shelf just lounging. However, I just started my sophomore year in school, and the second week in I'd already felt a bit overwhelmed by the reading assignments (only 1 math class and several English ones.) I thought I was a pretty good reader - English is a strong point for me - but I did a test in this book, and I scored only 163 words a minute! EGADS I was below average...but now, only 3 days later, I read 368 words a minute no joke! And there's no gimmick either - the book has an appendix at the back, where you do 1-minute reading tests, and you pick ANY article at random. After the timing, you write down stuff you remember, and then compare to the actual article. For the next test you read another, so its NOT just testing the same article, but a whole new one, and I was faster! I have more focus now and don't get distracted so easily, and when I try reading my old way (kind of hearing the words in my head) it feels SOOO slow! AND I haven't even finished the book yet (I think the first few chapters are most important, and then she gets more into "cheat reading" and skimming and such, and good conditions to read under, and other things I haven't gotten to yet. But I am VERY happy I can read much faster now, actually reading and comprehending things too. This book is incredible and a real investment.

Excellent Speed Reading Book!!

I've bought speed reading software (Speed Reader X: Speed Reading Made Easy) in the past and found it quite disappointing. Yes, you DO learn how to read faster with comprehension, but you are limited on what you learn.
The Complete Idiot's Guide to Speed Reading is extremely helpful in learning MANY new methods to speed reading. It's up to date to include speed reading on-screen, and offers many tips on increasing your comprehension as well. You'll learn to try out many methods to keep pace (single-finger, multiple-finger, card), and, with experimentation, can figure out which method works best for you. You also learn about picking out key words to get the main idea, while skipping the smaller, less-important words (filler). Or, if that method doesn't work well for you, there's always "though-chunking," reading words as groups. This method works best for me, and increased my reading speed because my eyes stop on 3 or 4 points per line instead of stopping to read each word in a 13-word line. In a sense, you're stretching your peripheral vision to read more than one word at a time. And the book offers many exercises on improving that.
There are a number of sample readings for you to practice on, along with space to keep track of your progress. This is very helpful to boost motivation and confidence, which the book points out is very helpful in making progress. If you feel and know you can speed read, then you will. The book offers a number of tips and strategies on how to remain focused while you read, where the best (and worst) places to read are, and how to give your eyes a rest.
I've just finished reading this book and continue to practice, practice, practice everyday. That is ESSENTIAL in learning a new method. With the tips I've learned in this book I was able to increase my reading speed from 235 WPM (words per minute, an average reader), to 390 WPM with about 80% comprehension, the same as I would get with my normal speed. I was able to read Johnny Got His Gun, a 320 page novel, in 2 days, something that might have taken me over a week with my normal reading. And I understood it all. A great book.

Get this book if you really want to learn how to speed read. It DOES take practice, but you WILL get results.
